"Meanderings in Colombia"
Presented by Antonio Salvadori
Colombia
is one of the countries in the world with the
greatest number of bird species. Unfortunately, due
to the guerilla war that has been plaguing the
country for many years, it has been an 'off limit'
country to the birding community. However, in the
last couple years the government seems to be getting
the upper hand, and it is now 'relatively' safe to
explore with a little bit of common sense. In his
talk Toni will discuss his January 2010 trip.
With a small group of international birders, he
spent a month traveling in Colombia from the Andes
to the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, seeing some
spectacular and endemic species as well as some of
our northern birds on winter vacation. Finally,
during the last week, Toni and his Swedish friend,
Sam, traveled to the FARC-infested Amazon region of
Vaupes. (In 1998 FARC overran the town, killing
several hundred people and kidnapping the chief of
police, who was successfully found and freed by the
army in May 2010.) Under the constant watchful eyes
of the police and army, and accompanied by the local
indigenous chief, Toni and Sam were able to explore
the Mitu area, finding some very interesting birds,
including a couple new to the Colombian list.
All are welcome!
